Walk of the old wash house
Follow the small road which goes down to the stream (le Merloux). You will find a lane on your left – take this lane and you will pass “sous le bois Grillet” which you can bypass by following the little road to rejoin le Vieux Bourg (the old village centre) where there are a few houses. Here you will come across a few old dwellings with their wells and typical Brionnais dry stone walls which form enclosures. There are also some crosses, one of which has been implanted in the cemetery.
After a detour at the north of the village by a pastoral lane, you arrive back near the Vieux Bourg where you can find ‘le Vieux Lavoir” (the old wash house) still with water and beautifully adorned with flowers in summer. Don’t hesitate to pause here for a while!
The rest of the walk allows you to discover La Croix du Pelon (in fact la Croix de Vevres) with its sculptures. You will then pass into”Au Paradis” (yes, it’s true). This is the name of this part of the village, where, by making a small detour you can admire “ la Tour de l’Enfer” (Hell’s Tower). It is beautiful here at sundown.
You can loop back on your walk by following a small quiet lane bordered by oak and ash trees which are over 100 years old in the hamlet of Verfay (more old buildings and dry stone walls).
