IMPHY
Imphy is located on the right bank of the Loire, at the mouth of the River Ixeure.
The site of Imphy was certainly occupied as early as the Palaeolithic period, and later by a Gallic tribe. Over time, the locality has had various names (Amfiaco, Amphéium, Amphy, etc.).
The Romanesque church of Notre Dame, built in the 12th century, bears witness to this distant past. It now boasts a magnificent organ, built in 2008.
Imphy is best known for its metallurgical site, which has evolved over more than three centuries. In 1887, it produced the 16 support blocks for one of the legs of the Eiffel Tower and invented Invar (an iron and nickel alloy). This industry continues to be at the cutting edge of progress thanks to its research.
For a long time, the Loire was crossed by ferry. The first bridge was not built until 1907. Today it is essential, as there are only two bridges across the river (Imphy and Decize).
The town boasts modern sports and cultural facilities, which are widely available to the town's many associations: a specialised gymnastics hall, gymnasium, sports fields, Amphélia aquatic and leisure centre with a Flot-Bleu-approved caravan park, fishing pond, village hall, music school, etc. There is also a Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture (MJC), where you will find an astronomy, photography and table tennis club.
The canoe-kayak club offers guided trips to discover the Loire and its natural environment.
